3 Steps to Easy Timber Maintenance with Sikkens

In a country where outdoor living quite often is more desirable than indoor living, it’s important to keep up appearances all year round.

Neglecting your outdoor timber coatings can make hard work of getting ready for that first spring BBQ get together when you should be reveling in the joy of the outdoor space you’ve created.

Here are 3 ways to make sure your timber coatings are the envy of your neighbours without breaking your spirits!

  1. Fail to Prepare or Prepare to Fail

Preparation of new timber can ultimately make or break the love you have for it. Slapping on a coating simply isn’t going to cut it.

Sikkens has created two preparation products, Sikkens Cetol BL Tannin and Oil Remover and Sikkens Cetol BL Deck and Wood Cleaner, that go hand in hand and are a must on your shopping list.

  1. Don’t Run-away from Pigments

Pigment should be your best friend for external timber. They are there for a reason. They protect timber from the harsh UV rays provided by our good old Aussie sun. Without it, you’ll be recoating your timber like a bad sunscreen with no SPF.

Quite often, Sikkens Cetol HLSe or Sikkens Cetol BLX Pro with a light pigment like 077 Pine or 006 Light Oak, will deepen the natural colouring of your timber like it does when it’s wet, while still providing enough UV protection that you’re not recoating at every turn of season.

  1. Keep an eye on it

Transparent coatings require maintenance. They are not a coat and forget type deal. With all Sikkens coatings they require at least a check every 12 months. If your coating is still showing a nice consistent sheen, you can leave the brush in the shed for a bit longer. If the coating is showing signs of wear and starting to become patchy in sections, it’s time to break out the cleaning solution and hose to prepare to recoat.

Using good quality products from the Sikkens Woodcare range will leave your timber looking like a million dollars, and following a few simple steps, Sikkens will keep it looking that way for years to come.

It is, quite simply, the best!
